Life in Japan after WWII was harsh. A Japanese student remembers it very well saying, "When
winter came we were really miserable. We had neither food nor clothing.... We were told to go to the countryside and find
food whereever we could. There was nothing in Tokyo." This shows little of the suffering many Japanese had to deal with. Many
having to cope with diseases and starvation.1

By being defeated in World War II japan decided to rethink their goals as a nation. The United States helped then in doing
this. In 1947 Japan decided to make a constitution similar to that of American and British constitutions. The constitution
was made up of 11 chapters and 103 articles. This westernization has made Japan a better nation. "Japans has implemented
it well and Japan's legal system remains stable since World War II."2
